Utica Shale Closing in on 1,400 Permits After Another Busy Week

The latest weekly report on permitting from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources shows that the Utica shale is moving closer to another milestone number.

24 new permits were issued in Ohio for horizontal drilling in the Utica shale last week.  Guernsey County was the hottest spot, as 9 of the new permits were for wells there.  Carroll County was the location for 6 permits, while Noble and Belmont counties each had 4.  Monroe County, which has been the busiest permitting location over the past month, finishes out the report with 1 new permit last week.

At the current permitting pace the Utica shale will cross the 1,400-permit mark very soon.  After last week's activity there are now 1,386 permits issued, 926 wells drilled, and 470 wells producing.  The Utica rig count stands at 41.
