Utica Shale Permitting Activity Goes Crazy Last Week
The latest weekly permitting update has been issued by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and activity was much brisker last week than it has been in a long time.
33 new permits were issued last week. To put that in perspective, the cumulative total of permits issued in Ohio went up only 33 over a two-month span between July 18 and September 19.
19 of the 33 permits were issued for drilling in Belmont County. Five permits were issued to Ascent Resources for wells in Harrison County, and three permits each were issued for wells in Guernsey, Jefferson, and Monroe counties.
With this flurry of activity there are now 2,041 permits for horizontal drilling in Ohio's Utica shale. 1,608 wells have been drilled, 1,018 are producing, and the Utica rig count climbed to 24.
